Complaint Bureau

Complaint Bureau

Welcome to the online services of the Suffolk County Executive's Office of Consumer Affairs. Should you wish to e-mail us, please include your full name, mailing address and daytime telephone number. Thank You.

This bureau handles the majority of complaints the office receives. These complaints cover many areas of consumer activity including: home improvements, furniture purchases, mail order sales, credit card billing and misleading ads.

Investigators are assigned to all cases which fall within the jurisdiction of the department. Complaints that are handled by other agencies are referred to the proper party. Investigators often visit homes to examine defective merchandise or improper workmanship. They also engage in surveillance activities, such as checking for the availability of advertised items.

Each investigator has developed an expertise in several common complaint categories such as credit, furniture, carpet and mail order.

The bureau also monitors the proper disclosure of refund policies in response to complaints and investigates to ensure compliance with the county's Deceptive Trade Practices regulation.

Intake personnel verify the licensing status of contractors and supply callers with information about open complaints. For assistance you may call (631) 853-4600 Monday through Friday, from 9am to 4 pm.

Click below for a copy of our complaint form - please set your printer page setup for legal size paper(8.5 x 14). To initiate a complaint, you must complete and sign this form and then mail it back to us with the required documentation. We do not accept faxed copies nor do we currently accept e-mailed copies. Before you file a complaint, please make sure you have made an effort to settle your complaint directly with the company. Also, please be advised that a copy of your complaint will, most likely, be forwarded to the vendor you have filed the complaint against. Complaints that do not fall within our jurisdiction, such as car repairs or insurance complaints, will be forwarded to the appropriate regulatory agency.
